Alcoholism In Women With Families

By: Adolph K. Reekie

For many young women the process of growing up was rather difficult. Of course this is subjective but to many female teenagers their life was full of problems. Not just any problems but big problems. These problems ranged from normal adolescent issues to truly serious issues like neglect, physical and/or psychological abuse. Many found an outlet through the abuse of drugs. Unfortunately, there are many drugs to abuse these days. One of the most prevalent is alcohol. So instead of dealing with the issues they are put off to a later date. For many that date comes too late. This abuse goes on through their lives and is fairly well hidden.
Once a family is created the art of hiding the abuse is that much more difficult. It is one thing to hide abuse from the spouse who isn't around all day. However, children are highly focused on their parents and see everything that goes on. Interestingly the abuser can go on for years tricking themselves that they are cleverly hiding their addiction. Of course nothing is further from the truth. Ultimately the abuse is plainly visible for everyone to see. At this point a decision needs to be made by the sober spouse. Deal with this issue or ignore it. The status quo may seem like the easier way to go but only leads down a road of ruin. This road isn't just for the parents but also the children. Since they have now learned how to abuse drugs and also how to hide this from the rest of world. Not a good situation. There are various ways to deal with the problem.
Drug Rehabilitation
Depending on the severity of the situation it may very well be the first step is drug rehabilitation. Drug rehabilitation is around the clock professional help to detoxify the body and deal with the withdrawals from the alcohol. The body gets accustomed to having alcohol in the system and once it is removed the body can have a severe withdrawal reaction. Once the physical effects of not having alcohol have been treated it is necessary to deal with the psychological effects.
12 Step Program
12-step programs are highly touted as a way to stay off of alcohol (or any other addiction). This program involves group therapy and having a sponsor. During this program you are to deal with the underlying issues of the addiction. When the person is feeling weak, upset etc. they are to call their sponsor who is to help them work through the situation. The goal is to work through the 12 steps and ultimately learn more about themselves and what has driven them to abuse in the first place. This works great as long as the person works well in group therapy. However many people do not deal well with this. Up to 95% of people fail in the 12-step program.
Non-12 Step Program
For women who are not open to truly dealing with their issues in a group then it is time to seek an alternative form of treatment. This should be done with a trained therapist in alcoholism. These treatments are tailored to the person with the addiction. They are focused on dealing with the root issues. Part of the therapy is behavioral modification. There are quite a few of these programs but they are harder to find, however well worth the search.
It goes without saying that dealing with the affliction of alcoholism is extremely difficult. But when a family is involved it is imperative to get help. The amount of damage done to the spouse and children is hard to estimate. In many situations the affliction is perpetuated in the children, as they become adults. If you find yourself with this problem then find the courage to talk to your spouse and get help. If you are the spouse of an alcoholic then realize that silence is not the way to deal with the issue. Your children's futures are at stake.
