Erectile Dysfunction, My Story

By: Adolph K. Reekie

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem among men. The causes can be physiological or psychological and can have devastating consequences such as feelings of shame, loss of masculinity or inadequacy. In most cases there is help. The changes we go through as we age also impact our entire sexual experience. Most men, 1 out of 10, experience impotence problems at some point in their lives.
I personally started feeling the effects of erectile dysfunction in my mid sixties. ED hit me extremely hard. Excuse the pun. Sex is not just for the young as some might believe. I believe the need for intimacy is ageless. It is a way for us to feel good about ourselves, and to maintain our youth as well. Sex for me may not be the same as it was in my twenties, thirties and forties, but it still can be as fulfilling and enjoyable as ever. Did I try the little blue pill? You bet I did! I experienced a few after effects, one of which was a very red and flushed face, but nothing I couldn't deal with. Eventually as I grew older that magic little blue pill no longer worked. I did not give up! I was determined to find another solution.
As I researched the topic I found there were several answers to my problem. Which one was for me? That was the big question. Not all work for every individual or situation. Folk remedies have been around since the thirties. In the 1990s, the first pharmacologically approved remedy, Viagra, was introduced to the public. There are a variety of options that exist, other than Viagra, for treating erectile dysfunction. Oral medications, hormone replacement therapy, penis pumps, vascular surgery, penile implants, and psychological counseling are many of the solutions to the problem. Not everyone benefits from these treatments.
There are two treatments on the market that involve using a drug called alprostadil. There are two ways to administer alprostadil:

Needle-injection therapy
Self administered intrauthral therapy (Muse)

A clinic here in Las Vegas ran a continuous ad in the newspaper concerning help for erectile dysfunction. This seemed to me to be a promising solution. I made an appointment for an evaluation and to get more information. I have been using the needle-injection therapy successfully for two years. The only side effects that I have experienced are bruising and some pain in the organ after injection. This was not a concern for me. It is important that you discuss any of these therapies with your doctor before using them. This is a lifestyle choice that I made to help me maintain my youth and to deal with the aging process.
I am also interested in the Muse therapy. Does anyone know anything about this, have you tried it?
