Samsung India has launched world’s first solar powered mobile phone, the Solar Guru (Guru E1107), in Indian market. The handset allows users to charge the battery using solar energy, once the phone battery runs out of normal electric charge.

The handset can be charged through a photovoltaic panel on the back of each handset or through an electric socket. It has the capacity to provide around 5-10 minutes of talk-time with one hour of solar charging. It takes 40 hours for charging the phone fully for 12-hour long talk time.

“The Solar Guru has been developed keeping in mind the needs of Indian consumers, especially customers residing in areas where the electric supply is unstable, so that the consumers can rely on solar charging to remain connected.” commented Mr. J S Shin, President & CEO, Samsung South West Asia Headquarters.

The handset features FM radio, MP3 ring tones, embedded games, torch light, 1 MB of user memory and 800mAh battery. It comes with security features such as Mobile Tracker that automatically alerts whenever the SIM card is changed or sends out an SOS message in an emergency. It also provides a specialized feature called “Mobile prayer” which possesses religious prayers and wallpapers.

The Samsung Guru E1107 will be available in India, Europe, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, and Latin America from June 2009. The phone is priced at Rs. 2799 ($60).
