World’s cheapest laptop for $10 or Rs 500

The Indian Government is all set to display the cheapest laptop costing only $10 or Rs 500 on 3 February 2009 in Tirupati during the launch of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology.

The low-cost laptop has been developed by the students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT Madras and Semiconductor Complex, a public sector undertaking. The government of India has planned to provide this type of laptops to the students of school and colleges across the country.

“At this stage, the price is working out to be $20 but with mass production it is bound to come down,” R. P. Agarwal, secretary, higher education said, reports Times of India.

The low-cost laptop comes with features like 2 GB memory, WiFi, fixed Ethernet and expandable memory. It is claimed that laptop will consume just 2 watts of power.
